Bid for cheaper housing may backfire, critics say

From today’s Examiner, “Proposed legislation meant to increase the number of affordable housing units in The City has critics charging that it may do the opposite.”

“Developers and some housing advocates say if the percentage is too high, some projects will no longer pencil out. That means less market-rate and less affordable housing. The revised ordinance comes at a time of uncertainty in the market, when some analysts predict a softening in prices and a rise in interest rates.”

Chris Daly, of course, rejects those concerns. “I believe if this legislation is passed, housing could still be built,” Daly said. “If the housing market tanks, we could revisit this.”

There you go, Chris! Purposely try to wreck the housing market just so you can try to get your way! What a legacy you’ll leave behind!
