Candlestick Cove fees revive development debate

After Chris Daly’s selfish, backroom dollar-grab in Rincon Hill, other developers are seeing additional fees (often without proper background studies) tacked on to their projects.

From today’s Examiner, “Supervisor Sophie Maxwell has proposed a $4.58-per-square-foot fee on housing planned at Executive Park at Candlestick Cove, an isolated 71-acre office park in the shadow of Monster Park, and the former Schlage Lock site in Visitacion Valley.”

“The discussion comes in the wake of a political battle this summer over developer fees for Rincon Hill, a proposed neighborhood of 2,200 condos near the Bay Bridge. Critics questioned a deal negotiated by Supervisor Chris Daly for a $25-per-square-foot fee for affordable housing and job training for South of Market residents that raised charges of backroom dealing. Daly has said the fees will protect the neighborhood’s low-income residents from being pushed out by gentrification.”
