Meeting to discuss fires on Ocean Beach

Both the Chronicle and the Examiner have coverage of a meeting that will happen tonight (Tuesday, October 18th) at 7 p.m. at park headquarters, Building 201 at Fort Mason.

The goal of the meeting is to allow neighbors to voice their concerns over bonfires on Ocean Beach.

“Fires are now allowed on the beach only between Fulton Street and Lincoln Way. Statistics collected this summer show that some nights there are as many as 32 fires on the beach.”

“One neighbor’s planter boxes were recently ripped up for use as firewood, and some have blamed the fires for other vandalism in the Outer Sunset.”

One Response to “Meeting to discuss fires on Ocean Beach”

  1. Just wanted to leave my little story about bonfires;

    I’ve lived in the city for years, and have loved going to Ocean Beach for a bonfire. Over the past few years, though, the police have cracked down on where you can park, where you can have the bonfires, and alcohol. Just recently, I was stopped by a cop who was angry that I had alcohol. I’ve been to Ocean Beach a million times and NEVER hid the alcohol I had or been stopped.

    Cops are now walking over the beach, warning people not to drink alcohol out there because of the “mess” it leaves, and the robberies and rapes that have happened (I swear this is what the cop said). Then the cops come back, out of the dark, and will cite you if they see alcohol.

    If the city just wants to stop the bonfires, just stop the bonfires. But, like everything else in this country, there’s no real policing going on here; a stupid few are messing it up for everyone. Too bad the police won’t allow it the way it was out there, but that’s too much work, so they’ll ruin it for everyone.
