San Francisco SPCA gets $13M gift, nobody complains
I have a dog. She’s my best friend. Heck, I love all animals. But I couldn’t help but point out that if folks like the Mission Agenda or Mission Anti-Displacement Coalition are going to complain about how more housing should be built for a particular segment of society, where does the SPCA get off building a $32 million dollar facility to house and care for homeless animals?
Honestly, this is all for the sake of getting my jabs in at those that need to see the bigger picture, so hear me out. A very generous philanthropist is kicking down a big chunk of the bill for a 60,000 square foot animal hospital and there’s nary a peep from the folks who love to complain about anything being built in the Mission. At least anything that doesn’t cater to their particular group.
What about the thirty needy families that could have had 2000 sqft, spacious homes on this same site, for this same money? You’ll pick on the white folks who need housing, but you won’t pick on the animals. I get it. Let me guess, you feel sorry for the puppies…
Let me remind everyone for just a second that the real minority in San Francisco is the homeowner. There are twice as many tenants as homeowners. Just because I have a job and can pay my mortgage doesn’t make me either superior or a member of a majority, although Chris Daly et al. would have you believe that’s the case.
Don’t be fooled. The kitties and doggies need homes. The residents of the Mission need homes. And the folks with jobs need homes, too. Shut up and build more housing already.
And congrats to the SPCA for doing such great work. They are a crucial member of our community, and are more than deserving of such a generous gift. They still need more $$ to complete the project, so whether you have a pet or not, don’t be shy. Donate some of your hard-earned money to help the animals.
