Viva City College! Building begins at Mission campus

Not that the Mission needed any new ‘life’ brought into it… There’s plenty there already… But the newest City College campus is underway anyhow.

From today’s Chronicle, “The $65 million project is scheduled to open in autumn 2007 on a San Francisco Unified School District property bounded by Valencia, Bartlett and 22nd streets in the middle of the Valencia Street corridor. Included in the development are a four-story, 163,000-square-foot building with classrooms, community rooms and a library and a plaza linking the new construction to a restored 1930s Art Nouveau structure.”

For those of you who are trying to picture where that is, it’s right across Valencia from Boogaloo and across 22nd from Lucca (where you get your ravioli, right?). Bartlett Street runs parallel to Valencia.

As I said, it’s not like they need more activity in that already vibrant location, but they’re going to get it anyway! This will bring in more students to the area, some to live and some who will commute via the 24th Street/Mission BART station two blocks away.

And then there are the complaints about parking. The article mentions how residents are up in arms that parking has been temporarily eliminated during construction, but imagine how much fun they’ll have looking for a spot after work when evening classes begin in two years!
