Western Addition safer since cameras installed

The Examiner is reporting that a couple of cameras installed on corners in the Western Addition have contributed to a lower crime rate in those locations.

"There were no homicides or assaults at the corner of Eddy and Buchanan streets during the first 73 days of the 90-day pilot program, and robberies, thefts and burglaries all dropped when compared with the same period the year before, according to statistics obtained by The Examiner through a public-records request."

But has the crime just gone elsewhere? "“Cameras will always have an impact on crime,” said George J. Smith III, the executive director of the Ella Hill Hutch Community Center. “I want to know whether crime has gone down on the next corner.”
